Stan Lee is back doing what he does best: creating pioneering comic book characters and universes. Here at Virgin, he'll be creating 10 superheroes and managing their universe as a writer, editor, and art director. More details to come shortly, but we can promise you one thing: This. Is. Gonna. Be. Big. And we have just one other thing to say: Welcome Home, Stan!

Stan Lee to oversee Virgin Comics' superheroes
Stan Lee, who will oversee Virgin Comics' new line of superheroes, says he has 'some exciting things in mind.'
By Geoff Boucher, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
April 19, 2008

Does Stan Lee have any more heroics in him? Richard Branson hopes so.

The British tycoon is going into business with the 85-year-old Lee, the co-creator of Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Iron Man, Daredevil and dozens of other signature characters made famous by Marvel Comics.

Branson's upstart Virgin Comics will formally announce the deal with Lee at this weekend's New York Comic Con, where Lee is being honored as "a living legend" and is scheduled to receive the inaugural New York Comics Legend Award at an event at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square.

The new venture will have Lee as the editor overseeing a line of superhero comics that will launch next year with a tentpole title he is writing himself. That project -- the title of which remains under wraps -- will center on a superhero team that sounds similar to his classic work on the Avengers at Marvel. (Lee ended his exclusive relationship with Marvel in the 1990s but still has ties to the company and even has cameo roles in the upcoming Marvel films "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk.")

"It will be a team of 10 heroes and they will be dealing with personality conflicts, personal problems and chemistry within the team," Lee said in an interview this week. "I'm going to get started working on it right away and I'm very excited about doing something that will be fresh and breaking new ground. I can't give away the details or the names yet, but I have some exciting things in mind."

Virgin has had a number of big-name creators writing comics under its banner, among them filmmakers Guy Ritchie, Terry Gilliam and John Woo, actor Nicolas Cage and musician Dave Stewart.

The company has largely steered clear of traditional superheroes. While Lee has an esteemed background in that sector, his most vital work was in the 1960s and 1970s, and his most recent work, with its bombastic dialogue, is not in sync with the tone of today's elite comics writers.

Sharad Devarajan, chief executive of Virgin Comics, dismissed any notion that Lee may be out of step with the times, however, noting that, especially as an editor, Lee will be a magnet for Virgin.

"We could not be more excited about creating a whole new universe with Stan Lee," he said. "His presence and the tremendous respect people have for him will be a call to action for writers and artists."

Lee's name certainly carries cachet in various corners of the entertainment business. This week, Rainmaker Entertainment Inc. announced a deal with Lee's Pow! Entertainment to create a franchise called "Legion of 5" that will reach the public as a feature-length animated film, toys, video games and comics. Last summer, Walt Disney Pictures signed a three-film, first-look deal with Lee's company. Lee also has been host and a producer of the Sci Fi Channel show "Who Wants to Be a Superhero?"

Recreate Classic Battles with Battle Packs Available Exclusively at Toys R Us

The Star Wars saga is filled with many epic battles between the light and dark sides, each critical in determining the fate of the galaxy. These Battle Packs, available exclusively at Toys R Us, capture two of those moments. On the frozen planet of Hoth, Luke Skywalker encounters the fierce wampa and must rely on his still-untested Force powers to escape an icy doom. And on barren Geonosis, armor-clad clone troopers and the massive droid army clash for the first time, a battle that heralded the galaxy-wide Clone Wars. The scene is set and forces in place to recreate some of the most epic scenes from the films, so dont be left behind when the battle begins!

Hoth Patrol

The Rebels establish their new base on Hoth, a world of snow and ice where daytime temperatures are bone chilling and nighttime temperatures are deadly. Rebel patrols riding indigenous tauntauns venture into the freezing landscape to guard the bases perimeter. On one of these routine patrols, Luke is captured by a wampa ice creature, one of the planets most vicious predators. The carnivorous wampa hunts its prey with stealth in spite of its size. Perfectly hidden by its white fur in the snowy Hoth landscape, the ice creature sneaks up on Luke and renders the unsuspecting Rebel unconscious with one swipe its massive hand. The wampa drags Luke back to its ice cave and suspends him from the ceiling, planning to make the Jedi its next meal. Only Lukes skill with the Force saves him from an untimely end: he uses the Force to retrieve his lightsaber, which enables him to free himself from the ice and escape from the wampa.

STAP Attack

Obi-Wan arrives on Geonosis just as the Separatists pledge their support to Count Dooku. The Jedi is there as part of his investigation into the clone armys creation, and accidentally uncovers the Separatists existence. He also discovers the huge droid manufacturing facilities on the planet and their dark purpose: to build a massive army for the Separatists to use in their quest to overthrow the Republic. Kenobi manages to relay this information before he is captured. The Jedi Council launches a rescue, which triggers a series of events that culminate in the first battle of the Clone Wars. Battle droids swarm into combat on Geonosis, a vast army under the control of the Separatists. Armed with blaster rifles, the battle droids face the clone troopers in combat: two forces both programmed to act with unwavering loyalty toward their creators. Single Trooper Aerial Platform (STAP) vehicles are used for reconnaissance and patrol by battle droids. These lightweight crafts are armed with blaster cannons, so they can also be deployed as support vehicles for larger crafts, as they are during the Battle of Geonosis.

Gather your forces for a droid attack, or channel the Force against a savage opponent. This opportunity will pass you by if you dont get aboard your STAP or trusty tauntaun and head to Toys R Us. May the FORCE be with you and stay tuned for more exciting news from Hasbro!

I have to admit it's been about four decades since I've tried to assemble a Hot Wheel track, but this one came together quite nicely. The full color instructions were detailed enough to help even a oldster like myself get racing in about 20 minutes.

The track pieces were of good quality and marked for ease of contruction. What appears from a mountain of parts is a four intersection base/motor with loops and high velocity banked turns (one which sports a gap to hurdle over). On the other end is the jump. It's straight up, the cars shoots up and falls into a funnel, at terminus is rotating tunnel. The car enters the tunnel and it rulls around until it's wheels allow it to be deposited back onto the base/motor where it gets shot down the track once more.

Adding a second car increases the chance of a collision, which as we all know adds to the fun of the playset! The included exclusive Mach 6 was a nice treat, but you'll want to pick up some other cars for some crash effects!

No tools required. Takes fout D size batteries.

It's a heck of a ride!

I truly wish more companies (Hey Hasbro!) would do this. It would save so much time and agony of queing up and waiting for hours sometimes to get a figure.

Kotobukiya's Anime "Air".

A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import! AIR is an original Kotobukiya character, designed and illustrated by Niθ – also known as STUDIO THE EDGE, freelance mecha designers of Demonbane, Queen’s Blade, as well as other anime series. The design was then sculpted by Tsukuru Shirahige and painted by Yukio Nishiyama especially for the Fuji Television program “Let’s Make Plastic Model Kits Custom”, which featured an in-depth analysis of the figure from concept to final product.

AIR is a modeler’s dream come true, with her large anthropomorphized airbrush, as well as other appealingly large features. AIR stands approximately 7 1/2" tall, and is packaged in a collectible window box. As you would expect from an item made by modeler’s for modeler’s, AIR is peerlessly crafted and impeccably detailed, and would be a welcome addition to anyone’s model shop workdesk!
